Aims
GOALS contributes to one of the key objectives of the West Forum – namely, to improve recruitment of students to higher education programmes in colleges and HEIs in the West of Scotland and beyond, from those areas and groups where participation is traditionally low. In so doing it also supports the Scottish Executive’s target of increasing participation in HE from publicly funded schools.
A continuing process
GOALS is not a one-off intervention but rather a continuing process which aims to have a cumulative effect on young people’s ambitions, aspirations and achievements.

The project is reflective, responsive and ambitious. It aims to advance a genuine social transformation, whereby less advantaged young people have an equal chance to realise their full potential.
Our aims
GOALS sets out a number of aims that it intends to meet over the lifetime of the project:
- Improving higher education awareness levels and participation rates for school pupils aged 10 to 18 in schools with under-represented groups and low participation rates.
- Stimulating school pupils towards greater academic achievement.
- Giving relevant advice and information at key stages on routes to higher education.
- Providing a continuum of support for under-represented socio-economic groups through a comprehensive and collaborative approach to schools in the West of Scotland.
- Co-ordinating and enhancing existing activity by avoiding duplication of effort and developing new collaborative initiatives.
- Working in partnership with the local education authorities in the West of Scotland.
- Assuring the sustainability and embedding of the Project.
